Falerno, famous since ancient times, was produced in the restricted site of northern Campania called ager Falernus. They talk about it, the second century BC until the fall of the Roman Empire, the greatest Roman writers of antiquity. Catullus was the first in the Republican era to celebrate the praises. Pregnant is the inscription found in Pompeii where he said: "Eldon does know: here you can drink for 1 axis, if you pay 2 axis drink better wine, wine Falerno with 4 axis" (CILIV 1679). Petronius Arbiter said that, during the famous dinner of Trimalchio, the haustores (the old sommeliers) served a Falerno older than 100 years; Tibullus (nunc mihi Gumosus veteris proferte Falernos) prayed to have suffered a cup of Falerno old and smoked. Also other distinguished Roman writers such as Cicero, Varro, Virgil, Horace, Strabo, Livy, Pliny the Elder, Martial, Juvenal, Gallienus and many others.
Legend has that Bacchus thanked the farmer Falerno for his hospitality and presented him with an extraordinary varietyof vine. Reconstruction of Silvio Italico is this: "Bacchus, in disguise, asked for hospitality at the old farmer Falerno; moved by his generosity, gave birth to lush vines on the slopes of Mount Massico"
Falerno was kept in special jars. They were produced in ancient kilns still in the area, closed by plugs (pittacium), with a sticker indicating the year. The Romans savor the luxurious banquet, to celebrate victories in war. These jars contained approximately 26 liters of the precious wine, the equivalent of the value of a slave. Stamped amphora containing the precious Falerno were found in Alexandria, Egypt, Carthage, in Britain and Spain.Falerno was offered by Caesar (47 BC) to celebrate his victories. "Falernopure and resistant" (Lucan).It was the wine offered by Cleopatra to Caesar himself. The Falerno was exported throughout the empire across the Mediterranean with ships that sailed from the port of Minturnae, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds. With the fall of the Roman Empire will cease exporting, but the territory retain for centuries, until now, the production of this wine.
